Our story

Onyx was founded with a clear purpose: to support, empower and improve the practice of frontline professionals who work with children and young people.

Our work is grounded in trauma-informed, culturally competent and neurodiversity-affirming practice, helping professionals working within children’s services to build supportive environments where all children can thrive.

Why ‘Onyx’?

Onyx is a black stone associated with strength, protection, and grounding. Its deep hue symbolises depth and introspection – encouraging self-reflection and personal growth.

Onyx is believed to have the power to absorb and transform negative energy, providing emotional stability and resilience. It’s thought to offer support during challenging times, helping individuals to stay focused and determined.

Who am I?

I’m Isabelle Rodker, founder and Clinical Director of Onyx.

For more than 25 years, I’ve worked in the fields of education and youth justice as an Arts Therapist and Clinical Supervisor.

As the parent of a child with complex needs myself, I’m passionate about supporting and advocating for children who are neurodivergent and are impacted by developmental trauma – and all those who care for them.

I’ve managed pastoral care in primary and secondary schools and worked as the clinical lead for children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. I’ve worked extensively both in the UK and overseas, supporting teachers managing trauma in the classroom. I offer consultations for adoptive parents through Adoption UK and have a private practice as an arts therapist for both children and adults.

For 17 years, I’ve also provided clinical supervision for a wide range of organisations supporting children, including schools, youth justice, and related services.
